University of California linguist and progressive political strategist George Lakoff has authored a thoughtful essay on what he sees as the significance of the media's adoption (or failed adoption) of the word "surge" to describe the addition of troops and support staff to the Iraqi conflict. Lakoff argues the term "escalation" is more accurate. He cites research by the Project on Excellence in Journalism. Lakoff spoke in 2005 at Williams College on his "framing" language theories.
